In October I flew to Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, to preach the gospel. The Crusade/Street Outreach was held in the Umoja district of the city in an open compound on the edge of a busy street. The organisers had worked hard to set up an excellent stage with a powerful PA system, guaranteeing that the gospel could be heard far and wide!
Each afternoon the Crusade opened with the wonderful vibrant singing of the music group, and all across the street people stopped to listen, and some danced! As dusk began to fall each evening, I climbed the platform to preach the gospel with my excellent interpreter. Hundreds of people heard the message each evening as they either walked past or stood listening, and I noticed that people who lived in the surrounding flats were also listening on their balconies. It was so moving to see people coming forward to commit their lives to Christ during the 5 days of outreach, including some homeless people who were living on the site, a very elderly woman who had only been in the district to visit her doctor and a young woman who had stopped to listen on her way home from work. This young woman was the first person to respond to the gospel on the first night. She wept as she stood in front of the platform, but her tears turned to joy that same night because she committed her life to Christ. On the Sunday morning I attended the church of my host, who was also the Crusade Director, the Rev Gabriel Ombok Yala. What a joyful service that was! It was wonderful to see two of the people who had committed their lives to Christ at the Crusade there at the service, including the young woman who had responded on the first night. I have since been informed that the homeless family has also started attending Rev Yala’s church and the church is seeking to help them to find somewhere to live. Everyone involved in the Crusade was greatly encouraged, and they felt that we had made a real impact in Umoja. |

At the end of April 2008 I flew to sunny Nigeria to undertake the Hope for Ikom crusade. Much preparation work had been done by the organising team to advertise the crusade and hundreds of colourful posters had been put up around Ikom. The day before the crusade started we drove through the city in a motorcade to greet the crowds which thronged the streets. We had a live band on one vehicle, while I stood on an open station wagon waving to the multitudes with some choir members behind me singing along to the music! Handbills advertising the crusade were given out en route, and many people gratefully received them. The joyful atmosphere was wonderful.
On the first day of the crusade the heavens opened and we had a tropical rainstorm! This prevented people from coming to the crusade, but undaunted, we had an amazing prayer meeting in the rain at the crusade site. I gave a short message of encouragement to the team and preached the gospel, and a number of bystanders came forward to commit their lives to Christ. The next day the weather was beautiful, and when I arrived at the crusade site I was met with the sight of a large crowd. The choir sang beautifully and there was an atmosphere of great expectation. |
